Screen Types

Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) offers a lightweight TV set that is suited to any indoor room. The image quality is renowned for amazingly sharp and bright images that use less electricity and generate less heat than competing TV technology.

Plasma screens offer a wide viewing angle with constant picture quality from any seat in the room, with slightly less glare. Plasma screens can cope with much larger areas, which makes them preferred for above 37" Plasma has a better clarity picture, although screens usually tend to degrade quicker, the brightness dimms until the colours brown. HDTV resolution is basically the number of pixels per line. The more the better. HD has a resolution above 1024x768. 1280x768 Demonstrates above the minimal grade to enter HD grade. Games consoles are already using 1080p resolution. If you are considering playing games then definitely choose a set that supports 1080p. 1080p HDTV supports 1920 pixels by 1080 lines.

A Plasma HDTV already has the tuner built in to receive a signal from both sources of broadcasting i.e. terrestrial TV and High-definition. A Plasma screen is just that - a screen without speakers or receiver.

Scan Lines: The number of horizontal pixels across the screen is represented by a line factor. Two common ones are 720-line and 1080 line. A 1080-line system has approximately 1080 vertical pixels and 1920 horizontal pixels, with up to five times the resolution of a standard definition picture.

Widescreens: Do all widescreen TVs cut off the sides on regular TV shows to leave black vertical bars? No, that is a common misunderstanding. Widescreen television is capable of showing the whole picture as you would see at a cinema. Regular TV shows are not recorded in widescreen, hence the black bars when there is no extra image due to non- widescreen programmes. This is where quality counts. You can change the screen output type on the remote control for normal TV. A good quality TV set has better software which can reduce the distortion - circles becoming ovals, squares becoming rectangles.

Channel 4 Moves to High-Definition TV

Channel 4 will be the first terrestrial channel to start broadcasting in High Definition before the end of 2007. C4 will broadcast using a simulcast signal. However, only programmes recorded in High Definition shall be screened in HD, a format which delivers better-quality pictures and sound. Other TV shows will be seen in standard definition.
